My Facebook status generated quite an outpour of sympathy and get well greetings including some therapeutic advice from yogis—friends and teachers alike. One of them, Maritoni Tordesillas, suggested that I get a dzi bracelet from World of Feng Shui as it had quite a curative effect on her when she was struck by a similarly spiteful virus last year.
Dzi (pronounced Zee) is a Tibetan word for a patterned stone, usually agate, of mainly oblong, round, cylindrical or tabular shape pierced lengthwise called Heaven's Bead (tian zhu) in Chinese. I had seen these beads during a working trip to Nepal when colleagues of mine from the ADB had acquired some and I have since been fascinated and intrigued by their talismanic “powers”. Dzi stones are said to do a number of things basically some protect its wearer from negative energies or accidents, some attract wealth or wisdom, while others might bring love and happiness.

Knowledge of the bead is derived from mythological and legendary tales and few beads have stirred more controversy regarding their source and method of manufacture which all helps in increasing dzi's inherent value.

Based on information from Dzi websites you have to first ask your stone to "bond" with you following these procedures:
Hold your stone, in your hand, under running water for a few minutes. In many eastern philosophies, water is a spiritual cleansing agent. Remember to keep positive thoughts in your head as you are doing this.
After drying your stone, put the stone between your palms as if you are praying. Bring your thumb tips up until they touch the tip of your nose (this is called a "Wei"). Then quietly, and sincerely, ask the stone to be a part of your life. Ask it to help protect you, and assure it that you will respect and take good care of it.
Let your Dzi stone sit outside in the sun for several hours after. This also adds power to it. Some claim that burying your Dzi in the earth for the night of the full moon will also help energize it.
This cleansing ritual should be performed at least once a month, so you don't have any negative bogies that the Dzi stone caught hanging about.
Other ways to help add power to your Dzi stone are moonlight, earth, and prayer. Let your Dzi stone sit outside beneath a full moon. The moons energy will gently help build your Dzi stone's power. You can also bury your Dzi stone in the earth overnight, this will help both cleanse and add power to it. Praying never hurts. Praying, chanting ( Om Mani Padme Om ), or just sending positive energy to your Dzi stone will all help it help you.

"A true Dzi has a milky white interior, and the color from the "eyes" and outside fade into it. The fakes only have color on the very outside of the stone.
In addition, examine the "Patina". The patina is a kind of tarnish that developes on the stones over a long period of time. This patina forms over decades and is a result of generations of built up human sweat, soil, dirt, and such causing a chemical reaction with the surface of the stone bead.
The "Aperture" or "Hole" is another way to get an idea of your Dzi Stones authenticity. If a Dzi bead is very old, then the ends of the hole should be worn fairly smooth by the constant and long term exposure to the friction of the string or wire that supports it. Also, If you look closely at it, you may notice that the hole is not quite concentric. This could indicate that it was hand-drilled. If it is perfectly round, then it was probably machined. The size of the hole may be a clue too. Way back in the day, they didn't have the nifty drilling techniques that we have today, so they couldn't make the small perfect holes for tiny beads, so a larger hole may also indicate it is an older bead."
